There is no guarantee that grants we apply for will be awarded funding. That is why we will partner together to identify multiple grant sources. When a grant is rejected, we will communicate with the funder to learn why. Sometimes even the strongest, highest scoring grant applications are rejected because of circumstances beyond our control. Perhaps they funded a similar proposal in the last round and want to diversify, there is another organization in the same area they want to fund, etc. Other times, there are things we can modify in the proposal for the next round. Communicating with funders and program officers is a crucial part of the process.
